Opening Photoshop and Setting Up a New Document
To get started with creating your watermark, you will need to open Photoshop and set up a new document. This is going to be your canvas for the watermark.
Go to File > New or press Ctrl + N if you use Windows, or Cmd + N if you use a Mac.
Change the dimensions to 1000 x 1000 pixels. A size this big will not overwhelm the photo it's put on.
Under the Create a new image menu, select Transparent as the background so that when applying to your images, it shows only the watermark.
For printing purposes, set the resolution to 300 ppi or 72 ppi if you are working for the web exclusively.
Add Your Text or Logo
Add the content of your watermark. It could be your name, logo, or other branding element that you may want to use.
For text-based, click on the Type Tool icon represented by the letter T from the toolbar above your canvas. Click anywhere on your canvas and type your desired text. Most photographers use their business name or website for a watermark.
Change the font, size, color of the text using options along the top menu. A neat, legible, professional font, such as Arial, Helvetica, or Futura is a good recommendation.
If you have a logo, you can also add it to your watermark via File > Place Embedded and selecting the logo file on your computer.
Adjust Opacity and Style
After you have added text or a logo, you would want to adjust its style so that it fits into your photography without drawing any attention from it. Here is how you make it visible but not striking:
Opacity: Once you have chosen your watermark layer from the Layers Panel, decrease the opacity so it would somewhat blend in. Anything between 30-50% in most cases works quite well.
Font Color: Choose a color that will appear on a wide variety of other background colors. Most photos work fine with white or black, but of course, experiment if necessary depending on the color theme of your photo.
Layer Styles: To give more texture to your watermark, right-click on the layer of the watermark and choose Blending Options. Drop a Shadow or add an outline using a Stroke to make your watermark pop on top of busy backgrounds.
Save Your Watermark as a Template
After designing a watermark, which is very important, you need to save it as a template to use on future projects.
Save As under File, and choose PNG as the file format. PNG maintains the original transparency of your watermark and will easily let you transfer it onto images of any type.
Add the Watermark to Your Photos
As you have already designed your watermark, it's time to add that to your photos. Select any of your photos and follow the steps below:
Go to File > Place Embedded and select the watermark PNG file that you saved.
Scaling and positioning the Watermark Having selected the type tool, use the transform handles to scale the watermark and drag it to one of the bottom corners or the centre, whichever suits your aesthetic best.
How to Batch Process for Multiple Images
As long as you are a professional with dozens of photos that you need to brand, manually adding a watermark will consume a huge portion of your time. That is why Photoshop has this feature called Batch Processing where you can watermark the images in bulk: First, create an Action to record the watermarking process. Go towards Window > Actions, click New Action and simply record the steps while you apply the watermark to one image.
Once the action is recorded, go to File > Automate > Batch, and then select the folder of images you want to watermark. This will automatically apply your watermark to all selected images, saving you a lot of time.
Saving Your Watermarked Image
Once you have added the watermark, save the image by clicking on File Save As. Then select the format you need according to your end use: JPEG if you are using the image on the web or TIFF if it is to go for printing.
